Jim Latimer reads of fellow photographer John Loxton's suicide in a daily newspaper. An old friend offers Jim an opportunity to take over Loxton's next assignment. He enters the orbit of Niedermayer & Hart, porcelain dealers with elegant headquarters in Hove. Jim's friends Ruth and Erich sense something isn't right and try to warn him. He is brought face to face with a terrifying manifestation of evil that had its inception in mediaeval Acre.

A band of unlikely vigilantes takes on an implacable enemy.

This is a story of friendship, courage and steadfastness, taking the reader on more than one journey before it arrives at its conclusion in the Berwyn Mountains of North Wales. More than just a fight for life - these friends are playing for the highest stakes of all.

This is the first book I have read in awhile that took me back to the classic horror books I read in my younger days. You know those old, great books where terror consumes you, the horror slowly, relentlessly, grows, your heart beating so fiercely you fear for it while breathing becomes the most difficult thing to do. That absolutely describes my experience with Niedermayer & Hart. This is a book, I believe, is best read with little knowledge of what it is about. It is a bit long but so worth it. I would recommend you set aside a couple of days for reading it as you will quickly come under its spell. I literally found myself unable to put it down. I read through the night until, unbelievably, at 91% done, (I read on a Kindle), I passed out sleeping! I was so mad at myself, being so close to the end and at an epic place in the story! Family members found this hysterical and I know that now there will be the, "remember when she was reading that book that scared her so much she would turn on every light in the house just to go to the bathroom and then she fell asleep right at the ending!", at which point they will laugh, uproariously, at me. I will never live this down. I would love to have this book on audio. The book has two tales being told, one is Jim's story and one is Hugh's, (actually one part, halfway through, is also the police part though I kind of tossed that in with Jim and heard the same voice narrating). For audio, my impossible dream team reading this would be Christopher Lee and Vincent Price. Their dramatic yet chilling style would fit so well. I watched the author's youtube video of the prologue reading and have high hopes for the audio version. It is spectacular! I highly recommend looking it up. I am not big on books being made into movies as most often that doesn't turn out well. However the author has a background that would suggest this book could be one of the exceptions, a book made into an amazing movie. I look forward to that.

I participated in the Spring Into Horror Read-a-thon, (a week long annual event), hosted by Michelle at True Book Addict. I won this book during that event and would like to say thank you to Michelle and to the author. No review was required or requested. I wrote the review based upon my feelings for the book. (Actually the author provided an Amazon gift card for me to purchase the book.) It is truly an awesome read and I am so happy I chose it as my prize! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a chilling tale.

Niedermayer Hart eBook M J Johnson Reviews

Maybe I expected too much after reading the other reviews. At first I was into it but by the time I was 40% thru I was skimming. I found the characters two dimensional, especially the evil ones. For me it became boring and I just wanted to get done.
I LOVED this book!!! Ever read a book and find yourself so consumed in it that you gasp out loud from what you have just read?? By the end of the prologue, I had done just that. I'm an eclectic reader, but don't drift towards horror-ish mysteries too often. So glad I did with this one!!! It is so well written, containing just enough of the necessary gore that your mind easily speeds to the dark crevices of imagination to which the author intended. The story line flawlessly flows without any dull moments. I don't want to give any spoilers, as the suspense of the story unfolding is magnificent. While reading it, I often wished I had taken a speed reading course so I could find out what was going to happen next quicker than my eyes were allowing my mind to progress!!!
The author has a sample of this book on his website. I didn't even read the whole thing. I read the prologue and rushed off to buy it. I was intrigued and needed to find out more. Jim Latimer gets a job at Niedermayer & Hart and immediately you get the sense that there is something off about the place. There are two separate stories woven together, one historical and one contemporary, and eventually it becomes clear what the connection is. The author does an amazing job of giving you the feel of the evil that is lurking without giving too much away too soon. This is a gripping story that has horror, mystery and suspense. If you love a well-told, absorbing story, give this one a try.
*Note Those are not typos, it is written in British English. I learned some new words and I now feel smarter.
Mr. Johnson's book belongs in the genre of paranormal/horror/suspense, a type of literature I don't normally read. I was drawn to this book by the location and hints that a historical tale underlay the modern one. In fact, it is the constant cliff-hanger created by the alternation between the two plots - 12th century and 1990s - that keeps the reader eager to come back to the tale - usually a couple of modern chapters interleaved with one chapter of the historical story. A very proper British distributor of art porcelain conceals an ancient horror in the cellar of its building - a horror that is ultimately regurgitated into the light through a set of circumstances involving some very persistent characters and loads of action.
The style and characterization are pretty flat (with occasional sorties into the metaphorical e.g., in Chapter 24 "The people scurrying along the pavements were hunched over against the cold, like refugees from a Brueghel painting." Or again, in Chapter 35 "An occasional tree loomed out like a spectral figure from the mist as if to warn them back.") For the most part, the narration simply proceeds without embellishment.
I personally did not find the book particularly scary. Gruesome, grisly, and violent, yes, but the depiction of these qualities struck me as a little clichéd (except for the death of one particular character, whose depth of degradation makes him the most memorable of the whole nasty lot). The opening Prologue is a bit of a gem, successful in hooking the reader into the tale, but I was a little disappointed by the end. It was predictable - there were no unexpected or original plot twists - nothing to make you go, whoa, what just happened here? And the author did leave some loose ends - points I had hoped to see resolved. I think this might have been done deliberately. Is a sequel in the works?
However, taken all together, the originality of the plot premise and approach to the subject make N & H an entertaining page-turner that I definitely don't regret reading, and so I'm giving it four stars. If a sequel is written, I would read it. And I think the novel would be a good candidate for a made-for-TV movie or a miniseries (perhaps on the Syfy network). It has a bit of a cinematic feel to it (possibly because its author is an actor?)
Recommended for followers of the genre.
